To cope with the large amount of dumped cats and kittens this Christmas, Cat Haven is seeking volunteers to become foster carers.
Cat Haven Foster Care Coordinator Freedom Bradbury said that by becoming a foster carer the public would be helping create more space at the shelter, allowing Cat Haven to look after even more abandoned pets and minimise euthanasia rates.
"This Christmas we will be stretched to the max trying to accommodate thousands of unwanted cats and kittens when we can only provide shelter for 120 at a time," she said.
"Foster caring is really rewarding, just knowing that you are helping an otherwise abandoned cat or kitten find a temporary loving home is a really great feeling."
Miss Bradbury said that finding foster carers for mother cats with kittens was always a challenge.
"A lot of people think that mothers with kittens will be hard to look after which isn't true," she said.
"Mother cats do a lot of the work for you as they look after the kittens and so you just need to make sure that the mums are well looked after and you give them all lots of attention."
Miss Bradbury said foster carers could provide a shelter for one cat or several for a week or several weeks.
'It's really flexible and there's no pressure on how many cats you look after or for how long."
"Basically, any public support we can get at this critical time is really appreciated."
