Old cats need a new home for Christmas – Pre Christmas Adoption Fee Special at Cat Haven

06 December 2016

All they want for Christmas is a new home and love. Some of the adult cats at Cat Haven have been at the shelter in Shenton Park for months and with the steady flow of cute kittens coming in each day, they are being overlooked for adoption.

Cat Haven is asking people to open their hearts and adopt an adult cat for Christmas, and to help encourage the spirit of goodwill, they are offering a $20 only adoption fee for all adults, all weekend this weekend from 10-11 December. Or you can adopt a Golden Oldie cat over ten years old for just a gold coin donation.

“Christmas and New Year is one of the busiest times for Cat Haven with dozens of cute kittens arriving daily along with lost, stray and abandoned cats, and cat adoptions slowing, so the older cats end up staying at the shelter for far too long. This can lead to the cats becoming more stressed, depressed and often this leads to a lower immune system resulting in illness.” Cat Haven Marketing Officer, Chandra Woodley commented.

Cat adoption at Cat Haven is easy and includes sterilization, micro-chipping and vaccinations but Cat Haven reminds people that a cat is for life, not just for Christmas, so if you know that you want a cat anyway, this is a really good time to adopt.

With over 340 kittens and cats in foster care, 230 cats waiting at the shelter and at Pet Barn/City Farmer stores (Cat Haven’s external adoption centres), they are desperate for people to come and adopt a new friend for Christmas.

“Although so far due to the long winter, kitten season has been delayed and there has been a more manageable flow of kittens surrendered to Cat Haven, there are still just too many cats for the shelter to cope with. Each year Cat Haven receives over 6500 unwanted cats and it costs over $28 a day to keep a cat in the shelter, which equates to over $6000 a day when the shelter is full. As a charity relying on donations, this means money is always an issue.” Chandra Woodley said.

“Our Foster Care Program is also full and we urgently need carers who may be interested in fostering a cat or kittens temporarily. Anyone can foster regardless of if you have kids, other pets, a small or large property. We provide full support and all cat food for fosterers so you only need the time and love to give.” Chandra Woodley said.
