Dear friends of Cat Haven,

due to some recent discussion on social media sites regarding the nature of our work and Cat Haven's role in cat welfare in Western Australia, I'd like to take this opportunity tell you a little bit about who we are, what we do and some of the difficulties we face every day.

Cat Haven is the only "open admission" shelter in Western Australia. We never say no to any cat or kitten presented to us, no matter how sick, old, or feral. We assess each and every cat coming through our doors to determine whether they are suitable for re-homing. Unfortunately, this is where staff members have to play "God" because they have to decide the fate of each animal.

This is a difficult and traumatic job - especially when you play it dozens of times a day. On a bad day we receive 50 cats and kittens. On a really bad day we get up to 90. This goes on day after day - it's remorseless. For those cats not suitable, and sadly yes, there are many, we offer a dignified and humane end, surrounded by dedicated staff who love cats, and who are faced seven days a week with ending their lives. Please always keep in mind the following: Research has shown that 50 per cent of shelter and pound staff who are directly involved with animal euthanasia will suffer Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in their lives as a result of having to do this.

We have extended our holding capacity in recent years with up to 170 cats and kittens on site at any one time. In addition, we have an extensive, very successful foster care programme. This would not be possible without the truly dedicated foster carers, some of whom feed kittens on a three hourly basis, 24 hours a day. We have between 300 and 400 cats and kittens in care at any one time. This is fully funded by Cat Haven thanks to the generosity of its members and the public.

We also have four Adoption Centres in Bibra Lake, Bicton, Cannington and Dianella which have extended our kitten adoption programme. Every kitten is de-sexed, microchipped and vaccinated when it goes out to a centre. We are grateful to these businesses for supporting our work and taking kittens from Cat Haven. Additionally, our website is seeing many of our older cats which are in foster care re-homed and we have reduced our package prices. Until 31 January, we are re-homing two cats or kittens for the price of one.

Cat Haven has also joined the "Getting to Zero" (G2Z) movement (www.g2z.com.au) which is working towards zero euthanasia in shelters such as ours.

We heavily subsidize cat de-sexing for those people who can't afford it in an effort to prevent the unnecessary births of more kittens in an already saturated market. We have reached record adoption numbers this last month, but we constantly look at strategies to further reduce the euthanasia we do on a daily basis, until we are at "zero".

We value everyone who contributes to our work, be they volunteers, staff, members, our committee, companies, individuals who donate or leave us legacies or you, the members of the public who take an interest in what we do.

We cannot do it without you!

Thank you and kind regards,

Roz Robinson

"Kitten Season" is here! By taking a donation tin to your workplace, local video store or cafe, you can directly help Cat Haven raise much needed funds to ensure that our Foster Care Programme continues to save the lives our cats and kittens.

Over recent years, we have developed a Foster Care Programme that has saved the lives of thousands of kittens and cats. Last year alone, we were able to save the lives of 1,533 due to this scheme. But it costs us approximately $25 for each cat and kitten to keep this programme running.

Our tins have attractive colour labels and a chain to prevent from theft. We will drop off the tin(s) to you and pick them up when they are full. It is the easiest way to help save a life.

Please contact Roz Robinson at roz.robinson@cathaven.com.au to get your donation tin today.
