In December Cat Haven launched a Christmas campaign which profiled 12 older cats looking for homes. By the end of December every one of the adoptable cats featured in the campaign found a new loving home. One of those lucky new owners was Neville Thompson of Padbury who had been reading the Joondalup Times when he came across the campaign. Mr Thompson said his cat of 13 years had recently passed away and he and his wife were looking for another companion. "After we read the article on the cats looking for homes, my wife rang Cat Haven to see which of the 12 cats needed a new home the most," Mr Thompson said. "Bell was the only one left but due to bout of illness a foster carer had taken him home to nurse him back to health." Mr Thompson said he visited the foster carer's house to see Bell, and it was love at first sight. "Bell was cuddled up on a scratching post and when he awoke, we found him to have a really lovely nature." Mr Thompson, who has since named the cat Clyde after it's original adoption name, says his new feline companion has quickly settled in. "He is a very relaxed cat, we have a ping pong ball, a tennis ball and a dangly fish and he plays with those just like a kitten." "He also likes walking around outside in our garden and comes back with bits of bottle brush stuck in his long fur, it's quite a funny sight." "We would thoroughly recommend adopting an older cat, they give so much back and often get overlooked by pet buyers." Cat Haven spokesperson Jessica Reid said that without the publicity from Joondalup Times, the pet would have had a very limited chance of finding a new home. "Being an older cat, that was not well and had been taken out of the haven to aid its recovery, no one would have seen this pet and so it really would have had a very limited chance of survival." Ms Reid said. "It's really great to see so many kind hearted people out there who have adopted older cats at Christmas. "It's normally the older cats that miss out on finding homes, but due to public support, we have managed to re-home older cats that would normally have a remote chance of surviving the Christmas period." Cat Haven is open for adoptions seven days a week at 23 Lemnos Street in Shenton Park.
