Over 70% of cats will have dental disease by the time they reach the age of three, the most common symptom noticed by owners is bad or fishy smelling breath. Dental disease begins when bacteria, food particles and saliva combine to form a substance called plaque. Plaque adheres to the surface of the tooth, including underneath the gums. If it is not removed mechanically by brushing or chewing, plaque reacts with minerals in the saliva to form a hard, yellowish material known as tartar. As the bacteria in the plaque sits underneath the gums, it creates inflammation of the gums, also known as gingivitis. Left untreated, the bacteria invade into the soft tissues and bone surrounding the tooth. The chronic inflammation from dental disease has negative effects far beyond bad breath. It can also cause damage to the heart, kidneys and liver. Dental disease is painful for your pet, and ultimately results in the loss of teeth and shortening of their life span.
