Adopting from Cat Haven

Are you ready to adopt? Here’s what you will need.

To adopt a cat from Cat Haven, you will need to be at least 18 years of age, and be a permanent resident of Australia.
This is to ensure cats are taken to a long-term home. If you are not a permanent resident of Australia, you can still care for a cat by becoming a foster carer.

We will ask you to provide a secure carrier, or purchase one from us, so you can transport your new cat home safely.

The last item you will need is a form of photo ID (e.g. a driver’s license) with your current address. If the photo ID does not include current address, you can provide us with secondary proof of your current address, such as a utilities bill. This can be provided in soft copy (i.e. via your mobile device) if need be.

All cats adopted from Cat Haven will:

  • Be sterilised
  • Be microchipped
  • Have their 1st vaccination already administered
  • Have worming treatment provided
  • Have flea treatment provided

By adopting from us, you may also qualify for a discount on specific food and other products from our shop.

Some cats may need additional veterinary procedures before they can be taken home. In this case, the Cat Haven team will give you all of the information you need.

Viewing cats who are available for adoption

Because we re-home cats and kittens very quickly, we cannot list every single cat who is available in our shelter. Thank you for your understanding!

There are 3 ways to meet the cats who are currently available for adoption:

Option 1: Visit our shelter in Shenton Park

Located at 23 Lemnos Street, our shelter has a shed dedicated to cats and kittens who are ready for adoption. You can visit in person any time during our adoption hours (please consult our home page for the current adoption open hours).

Our adoption shed has up to 40 cats on any given day – usually with a broad range of age, colour, and temperament. From energetic young kittens to relaxed older cats, we will be happy to match the right cat to you and your home.

Because our cats and kittens are usually adopted very quickly, we are unable to post photos of every cat who is ready to be adopted. You are welcome to visit our site in Shenton Park until you find the right cat for you.

Visiting the shelter in person is also a great way to ensure you have everything you need to care for your latest member of the family. Between our shop and second-hand items, you are sure to find plenty of items that will look great in your home.

Please note that the peak season for kittens is between November and March, and the availability of kittens will vary depending on the day.

 

Option 2: Browse the foster website

You can view the cats and kittens who are available in a foster home, from the comfort of your home – or anywhere with internet access!

  • Step 1. Browse the cats currently in foster homes.
    Our Adopets website allows you to scroll through dozens and dozens of adorable cats, with photos and detailed descriptions. You can apply filters on their age, characteristics, and more.
  • Step 2. Create an Adopets account, and register your interest.
    Once you have found a cat that interests you, you can click the "Adopt me" button on the cat's profile. Please note that this does not place a hold on the cat, or guarantee an adoption. It is simply a request to meet the cat, with a view to adopt them.
    Adopets will prompt you to sign up for an account, if you have not already created one.
  • Step 3. Schedule a meeting with the foster carer.
    Once you have registered your interest in a cat, the Cat Haven foster team will arrange an appointment that suits both yourself and the foster carer. Please note that video calls may be possible.
  • Step 4. Meet the foster cat.
    Please bring a form of ID to the meeting. The foster carer will supervise and support you in meeting the cat. If the meeting goes well, and you are still interested in adopting the cat, Cat Haven will prepare the adoption paperwork.
  • Step 5. Formalise the adoption.
    Cat Haven will let you know what is needed to complete the adoption. The team may ask you to come in to the Lemnos Street site, to fill out paperwork in person.

Option 3: Check who is currently at your local External Adoption Centre (EAC)

Our external adoption centres are a more local way to meet and adopt a cat!

These amazing businesses support Cat Haven by hosting cats and kittens. You can adopt from the shop itself, saving you a trip to Shenton Park.

Before visiting an EAC, we recommend contacting them to confirm your favourite featured cat is still there. Visit our EAC page to browse our featured cats, and find your nearest EAC location.

Ringworm active cat or kitten

Adoption fee is typically waived.

Ringworm is a very treatable fungal infection!

Which cat supplies are available at the Cat Haven shop?

We sell the following supplies:

  • Bowls

  • Litter, litter trays & cleaning products
  • Scratching posts & cat towers
  • Collars and harnesses
  • Health & grooming items

Most of these items can also be purchased from our second-hand area on site, at a reduced price.

What if I can no longer care for a cat that I have adopted?

If for any reason you can no longer care for an adopted cat, and do not have anyone else who can take care of it, please return it to Cat Haven. Please note that bonded pairs must both be returned together.
